Indoor Spring

I am obsessed with thoughts of spring and summer. Seriously. It’s as bad as a six-year-old waiting for Christmas. Visions of warm sunniness torture my days and makes me cry myself to sleep at night (kidding). Unfortunately, neither of these seasons has arrived yet in the area where I live, so I’ve had to find ways to bring green and flowering beauty into my life while the snow refuses to melt outside and temperatures stubbornly remain at 40 degrees.

About two weeks ago, I received a calla lily plant and I put it on my dining room table (good light there) so I could enjoy the beautiful pink flowers. Then, a few days ago, a strange thing happened. A white calla lily flower began to grow in the midst of the pink ones and then shot up Michael Jordan-esque heights in a very short period of time. Leader? Over-achiever? Vanity? Purity? It was an irresistible image full of fun metaphors, and I knew I had to shoot it.

I’ve made a series of images from that calla lily plant on the table in my house. Which is your favorite?

Kick-butt vehicles….in fog

Kick-butt vehicles in fog = gorgeousness! Awesome. Stunning, even. (I just love tossing vocabulary together in unexpected ways, like using “gorgeous” and “kick-butt” and “vehicles” all in the same sentence. It’s fun.)

Those of you who know me well know that I’m a big supporter of the good men and women in law enforcement and public safety. As one of my service projects during the holidays, I shot one of the local “Shop With a Cop” events for free. It was a terrific experience, and one that probably would have brought tears to my eyes had I not needed them to be blur-free so that I could see through my viewfinder. 😉

Even though I was shooting on assignment for a client, I made sure to look out for personal work/fine art print opportunities. And I found a great opportunity as I watched a very long line of law enforcement vehicles drive through the early morning fog to the store where the kids and cops would shop. I’ve shared three of those prints on my website. (Here’s a little preview, too.)

Rose Print – Fine Art and Inspiration

I’ve been looking forward to sharing my latest fine art print design with you, but I had to wait until after Christmas had passed because it was created specifically as a gift and I didn’t want to ruin the surprise! But the 25th has come and gone, and the print was unwrapped and well-received, so here we go…

The quote (by President Abraham Lincoln) reads: “Die when I may, I want it said by those who knew me best that I always plucked a thistle and planted a flower where I thought a flower could grow.” It was chosen because it was a very relevant and meaningful quote for the recipient.

Do you want a beautiful, custom-designed fine art print like this for your office or home? Choose your favorite photos from my portfolio and let’s talk! If you want custom photography of your favorite place or subject, I can take care of that, too.

Ever tried a wrap?

Oh yeah…. a veggie wrap with hummus or veggie cream cheese and crisp cucumbers, ripe tomatoes, green onions… YUM. Creamy and crunchy veggie goodness!

But, this being a blog about photos instead of pitas, the wrap I’m referring to is a gallery wrap. Have you ever purchased a gallery wrap of your favorite photograph? If not, I highly recommend them. Gallery wraps are canvas prints wrapped around a wooden frame (with finished backing) that offer a stunning, textured, almost 3-D look. It is a classy, modern way to display fine art photographs.

I recently had a client in El Paso order three of my prints (20×30 and 16×24 – they look best when they are large) in gallery wrap style and I was so thrilled about how great they looked that I nearly drove them down to Texas myself just so I could get the wraps to the client faster. But common sense prevailed and I sent them via mail to her address, but not before snapping some photos of two of the gallery prints on my walls… so that I show you how cool they look.

Check ’em out…

My client called this afternoon to let me know that she had received her prints and said, “They blew me away!! I LOVE them!” She then told me that she was going to have her husband hang them up on the wall immediately so that she could show them off at the dinner party she was planning (maybe she can have a “wrap party!”). True story. And I love it.

Nearly all of the fine art photos prints posted on my website are available for gallery wrap printing. Order yours before the end of September and you’ll get 20% off! E-mail me for details on pricing.

Who knew a rooster could be so cool?

I am currently working on processing the photos that I shot during last weekend’s Scott Kelby Photo Walk, and hope to get those posted soon. In the meantime, I thought I would share one of my favorite recent images. It is currently posted on my website, but I’ll re-post here in case you haven’t seen it.

1st Place Photo at “Bring Your Best” Competition

On Monday, I submitted two framed photos to the “Bring Your Best” competition being held at Utah Valley University during the school’s Summer University conference. Faculty and employees from many different departments submitted art work and other crafts to the competition, and the work was reviewed and judged by a panel. I was thrilled to find out that my image, “Hidden Iron”, was given the blue ribbon in the Photography category. Woo hoo!!! It really made my day.

Below is a look at my winning image. This photo looks terrific sized 20×24 in a dark wood or black frame. Contact me by posting a comment or e-mail me through my website if would enjoy this fine art print in your office or house! (The copyright symbol, of course, will not appear on your print.)

Local art show on Friday

Good morning! I’m taking a few precious moments of “get ready time” before I head to my other job to drop a note about an upcoming event in my area. On Friday April 3rd, at 7:30 p.m., there will be an opening reception/art show at Red Plum Designs in Orem. The title of the show is “Signature Squares” and showcases 12×12 works from local artists. I was invited by Red Plum to submit a fine art photograph for the show and am excited to be a part of this event.

This art show is taking place on the same evening as the Friday Night Gallery Stroll in Provo, so it will be another fun destination to put into your schedule if you are already out and about looking at great art. I have also been told by Red Plum’s owner that there will be fun prizes given away at the beginning of the reception, so come at 7:30 for the best chance to win!!!

You can find the address for Red Plum Designs by clicking here. I hope to see you on Friday!
